Beta Chapter celebrates its 35th anniversary
Rosa Eggertsdottir has organized and supervised numerous lectures and workshops on the versatile aspects of literacy all around the country. She has, independently and in collaboration with countless teachers, worked on developmental projects all aiming at improving student literacy competence. Eggertsdottir has also supervised graduate studies into literacy at the Faculty of Education at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at The University of Akureyri. Eggertsdottir is undoubtedly the chief authority when Icelandic educators need advice on literacy.
Eggertsdottir is the author of a new approach to teaching reading which she calls “Beginners Literacy”. This method has been developed in collaboration with practicing teachers in primary schools / elementary schools and her colleagues at the Educational Research and Development Centre at the University of Akureyri. The objective is to empower teachers with more extensive academic knowledge of literacy and skills concerning literacy teaching. The approach has been very well received and assessment of student competence has yielded positive results. Last winter approximately thirty schools were applying the method and most likely twenty more will join this group next winter. Eggertsdottir has published a bulk of textbooks for elementary students as well as academic material for teachers and educators in general.
Also present for the celebration of this festive day were some members of the recently founded Mu Chapter, our State President, Sigridur Ragna Sigurdardottir from the Alpha Chapter and one member of the Kappa Chapter. The members of the Beta Chapter thank all of them for honoring us with their presence on this joyful occasion.
